On Tuesday, Pepe entered his name in the European Championship record book. The Portuguese central midfielder became the oldest player ever to play in a European Championship final during the match against Czechia in the first round of the Euro'2024 group stage.
The previous record holder was Gábor Király, the Hungarian goalkeeper who was 40 years and 86 days old when he played against Belgium in Euro 2016, which ended with Portugal winning.
Known as the 'man with the pajama pants', Király made headlines for always playing in pants, as opposed to the usual shorts used in professional soccer.
Pepe, at 41 years and 113 days, is now the oldest player ever to play in a European Championship and could add to that record if he plays again in Portugal's campaign in this competition. Playing in his 5th European Championship, the central defender also equals the record set by Luka Modric, for Croatia, and is 'only' behind Cristiano Ronaldo.
