According to the spokesman for the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva, Jeremy Laurence, the incident took place on Tuesday in a stadium in the city of Sar-e-Pul, where a group of 63 men and women were flogged for alleged offenses such as running away from home or moral offenses.
The punished, 48 men and 15 women, received between 15 and 39 lashes in front of representatives of the authorities and local residents, before being sent back to prison to serve their sentences, according to information received by the body.
Jeremy Laurence recalled that corporal punishment is a “clear violation” of international humanitarian law.
He also emphasized that women who are publicly punished run a greater risk of suffering further violence from their families and communities.
He also called on the Taliban to guarantee the right to due process and a fair trial, in particular access to a legal defense.
