It is unacceptable that, in the 21st century, around 10 thousand families in Mahubo, Boane, Maputo province, are still forced to use water from ponds for consumption. This situation is a clear reflection of the negligence and failure of the competent authorities to guarantee a basic human right: access to drinking water.
Families in Mahubo are aware of the risks associated with drinking contaminated water, including serious illnesses that can affect the entire community. However, the lack of viable alternatives leaves them with no choice, exposing children, adults and the elderly to preventable health hazards.
This scenario cannot continue. Local, provincial and national authorities need to take urgent action to resolve this crisis. Investing in sanitation and water distribution infrastructure must be a top priority. Furthermore, it is essential to create public policies that guarantee the maintenance of these services, preventing situations like this from occurring again.
The Mahubo community deserves more than empty promises; deserves concrete and immediate actions that ensure the dignity and health of its inhabitants. The lack of access to clean water is a violation of human rights and a clear sign that much still needs to be done to achieve a fair and equitable society. Authorities must act now, before more lives are put at risk.
