Collision Between Buses in the Centre of Mali Causes 16 Deaths and 48 Injuries

A collision between two buses in the centre of Mali caused 16 deaths and 48 injuries, six of them seriously, the Ministry of Transport announced in a statement today.

‘The accident was the result of a head-on collision between a bus belonging to the Fakala Transport company, coming from Mopti, and another belonging to the Ascofaré Transport company, which was travelling in the opposite direction’ in Ouan, in the San region, on Thursday, the ministry announced in a statement received today by the France-Presse news agency (AFP).

All the injured were assisted at the scene and transported to the San reference health centre by civil protection officers, the statement said.

The probable causes of the accident were speeding and carelessness on the part of the drivers, according to the ministry, which added that an enquiry had been launched to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident.

In neighbouring Senegal, another accident that also took place on Thursday between Ndouloumadji and Ourossogui, near the border with Mauritania, caused six deaths and 14 injuries, seven of which were serious, the President, Diomaye Faye, said on his Facebook page, offering his ‘saddest condolences’ to the victims' families.

Road accidents are frequent in Mali and Senegal, usually due to the poor state of the roads and vehicles, as well as human error.
