Family Decided to Pray Instead of Medicating Daughter Who Ended Up Dying

Elizabeth Struhs was found dead in the house where she lived in Toowoomba, Australia, in January 2022, after having been without access to insulin for several days.

The 8-year-old girl was diabetic, and her family is being judged for refusing to give her medication for the disease, opting, instead, to pray for a cure.

The family belonged to a religious group that is now being tried in court.

There were 14 people on trial, all of whom refused lawyers. Among them are the victim's father, aged 52, and the leader of the religious group, both accused of murder, as it is believed that both knew that their actions would dictate the girl's death.

The victim's mother, her 21-year-old brother, and ten other people were accused of negligence.

According to what was heard in court, her parents chose to reduce their daughter's insulin dose at the beginning of January 2022, having later chosen to withdraw her medication completely.

Members of the group often met at the girl's house to pray, but it was clear to everyone that Elizabeth was in danger, without there being an attempt to call a doctor, said the prosecutor in the case.

It is also known that the mother had previously been arrested for not giving her daughter insulin, at which point the girl had to be hospitalized.

During the trial, the court will hear from 60 witnesses, including one of the Struhs' daughters, who was removed from the family.
