Five Dead And Seven Injured In Shooting At Party In Chile

Five people were killed and seven were injured in a shooting at a party organized northwest of Santiago de Chile, authorities said on Tuesday.

Four men and one woman died during "an altercation", said police colonel Gabriel Villanueva, without elaborating.

The victims, most of them foreigners, were taking part in a party in Lampa, a city in the metropolitan region of the Chilean capital, the police said, without specifying their nationalities.

Speaking to the press, Chilean President Gabriel Boric attributed responsibility to organized crime: 'It is very serious and deeply disturbing. I want to be very clear and say here that we will not allow organized crime to win the battle."

Despite Chile being one of the least dangerous countries in Latin America, safety is the main concern of its inhabitants, according to surveys.

At the end of last week, Chile recorded several homicides, in which 10 people died.

Between 2014 and last year, the number of homicides increased by 60%, sexual assaults by 46% and violent robberies by 11%, according to data from the Undersecretariat for Crime Prevention.

Gangs such as Tren de Aragua, of Venezuelan origin, operate in this region of the continent, committing murders and extortion.
