Flights Suspended in Frankfurt After Environmental Activist Raid

Air traffic was suspended today at Frankfurt airport, the largest in Germany, following an invasion by environmental activists that led to police intervention, police said.

"We are doing everything in our power to remove climate activists from the parking platform," a police source told Agence France-Presse.

All departures and arrivals have been suspended in Frankfurt, the airport said on the online portal.

"Due to an ongoing demonstration at the airport, flights are currently suspended. Passengers are asked not to travel to the airport for the time being", requested the airport on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

The demonstration was claimed by activists from the group 'Letzte Generation' (Last Generation), a movement responsible for several actions in the name of climate protection.

One of the most frequent and controversial methods of this group is blocking roads and places, sticking their hands to the asphalt.

"Six protesters used small pliers to make openings in the [airport's] fences and arrived on foot, on bicycles and on skateboards at various points on the take-off and landing runways," the group said in a statement.

The action aims to "call on the German Government to participate in the drafting and signing of a legally binding international agreement that regulates the progressive abandonment of oil, gas and coal by 2030", they stated in the same note.

The protest is part of an international campaign carried out in conjunction with other organizations, they added.

On Wednesday morning, several environmental organizations carried out actions against airports in Europe, including London's Heathrow, the largest in Europe, and Cologne, also in Germany.
