Former Russian Deputy Defence Minister Arrested for Alleged Corruption

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) today detained former Deputy Defence Minister Dmitri Bulgakov (2008-2022) on charges of alleged corruption.

Bulgakov was transferred to the FKU Sizo-2 prison centre, located on the outskirts of the Russian capital, Moscow.

The Russian authorities have so far not provided any further information on the case.

Bulgakov's arrest follows the detentions of several senior Ministry of Defence officials in recent weeks.

The most publicised arrest was of Tumur Ivanov, also a former deputy minister and considered one of former Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu's trusted men.

These arrests related to the Russian Defence Ministry have come at a time when the ministry is being restructured, particularly after the recent appointment of Andrei Belousov as the new Defence Minister to replace Shoigu, and in the midst of the Russian operation in Ukraine, a country that Moscow invaded on 24 February 2022.
