German Minister Says Putin Waging Hybrid War Against Europe

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in Washington today that the plans to kill the CEO of the Rheinmetall arms company are further proof that the Russian President is waging a hybrid war against Europe.

"As far as the Rheinmetall case is concerned, I think it is further proof that the Russian President (Vladimir Putin) is waging a hybrid war against Europe. This includes cyber-attacks, sabotage, disinformation campaigns and also attacks against people on European soil," said Baerbock at the NATO summit in Washington.

CNN has revealed that US intelligence services and their German counterparts have this year foiled a Russian plot to kill Armin Pappenberg, whose company, considered Europe's largest arms manufacturer, has been instrumental in German support for Kiev.

Baerbock, who is a member of the Greens - a party with a pacifist tradition - said that in the current situation, it was clear that the recipes of the past could not be used.

"Two and a half years ago (Russian invasion of Ukraine), we woke up in a different world, a world in which the Russian President had broken the European peace order and nothing was the same anymore," he said.

"For a long time there were meetings of the NATO-Russia Council where we tried to reach disarmament agreements to guarantee peace. Now we know that, in order to live in peace, we have to have the capacity for deterrence and defense with our European partners," she added.
