Man Sentenced To One Year In Prison For Stealing Two Boxes Of Shrimp And Ice Cream

A man was sentenced to one year in prison for stealing two boxes of shrimp and an ice cream, worth 48 euros, from a supermarket in Barcelona, Spain, in June 2021. The defendant also summoned the employee who was at the cash register, whom he said was a drug addict and ex-convict.

In addition to imposing a one-year prison sentence, the Barcelona Court ordered the man to pay 47.97 euros to the La Sirena supermarket chain, the amount corresponding to the products, reported the EFE agency this Sunday.

The Public Prosecutor's Office, in turn, had requested six years in prison and compensation of 142 euros.

The judicial body detailed that the man, who is interned in a prison psychiatric unit, had been a drug addict since adolescence, having entered the establishment with the intention of stealing food.

“[He had] at least two boxes of shrimp in a bag and an ice cream. He approached the cashier and, with the intention of intimidating her so that she would not pursue him, told her that he would not pay anything, and that he had been released from prison and was a drug addict”, it reads.

In addition, the man also showed the employee that he had “a scar from his wrist to his elbow and a tattoo”, before leaving the supermarket with the products.

The Public Prosecutor's Office acknowledged, however, that the man “had significantly limited intellectual capacities” at the time, since he suffered “from addiction to drugs such as cannabis, heroin and cocaine”.

In this vein, the court argued that the individual needed the money “to continue to acquire” narcotics, in addition to having “an administratively recognized incapacity of 65%”, despite previous convictions.
