Egypt Insists on Israel's Withdrawal from Rafah Crossing

This demand, according to Egyptian security sources, is part of "a global vision" regarding a truce agreement that the Egyptian delegation will "communicate to all parties" at the Rome meeting, referring to Israel and the other two mediators: the United States and Qatar.

"The Egyptian vision is the need to reach an agreement formula that stipulates an immediate ceasefire, guarantees the entry of humanitarian aid into all areas of Gaza, freedom of movement for citizens and the complete withdrawal from the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing," occupied since May by the Israeli army, according to the sources told the Spanish news agency.

The Egyptian sources confirmed today that mediating delegations from Egypt, Qatar and the United States will meet in Rome with the head of the Israeli Intelligence Services, David Barnea, to continue negotiations for a truce in the Gaza Strip.

According to the same sources, the meeting is taking place "as part of the mediators' continued efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza" and to assess "developments" for an agreement after nine months of war that has caused the deaths of more than 39,000 people.

"The main problem facing the chances of reaching this agreement is the way Israel approaches it (...)", the sources said. They also specified that Israel "is trying to introduce amendments to the truce plan", among which, he said, "they want to examine the displaced people after their return to northern Gaza when the ceasefire begins and refuse to withdraw from the Palestinian side" of the Rafah crossing.
