Passive Smoking: Vapes Are Less Harmful Than Traditional Cigarettes

According to new research, children who live in homes where adults use 'vapes' are exposed to much less nicotine than children who live in homes where adults use traditional cigarettes. Even so, researchers remember that vaping continues to expose children to nicotine and, unfortunately, it can also present other risks.

For the study, available on JAMA Network Open, scientists analyzed the daily lives of almost two thousand children, aged between three and 11, and tobacco consumption at home was reported by their parents or guardians. They determined the levels of nicotine absorbed by children through blood samples.

They concluded that the children involved in the study with the highest percentage of exposure to nicotine were those who lived with people who smoked traditional cigarettes. They also discovered that these children are twice as vulnerable to being exposed to nicotine.

Vape users are thought to absorb 99% of the nicotine they inhale, but some of it is released when they exhale, so children exposed to these aerosols had some nicotine in their bodies, but absorbed 84% less than their peers. who lived in homes with people who only smoked tobacco.

Taking this into account, the conclusion of the research, according to the authors, is that people need to stop smoking or using 'vapes' at home.
