Lula Da Silva And Putin Talked About Peace Proposal In Ukraine

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke today with Russian President Vladimir Putin about Brazil and China's peace proposal to end the war in Ukraine, official sources said.

In a statement, Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the two leaders spoke by telephone about topics on their common agenda, which included “the peace proposal from Brazil and China for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine”.

The peace proposal was born out of the joint communiqué issued last May by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Celso Amorim, Brazil's Presidential Adviser for International Affairs.

In this statement, both sides called for the “de-escalation of the conflict” in Ukraine, defended negotiations, prisoner exchanges and the extension of humanitarian assistance. Brazil and China also took a stand against the use of nuclear weapons in the conflict started by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to the Brazilian government, during today's phone call, Lula da Silva and Putin also discussed issues related to the BRICS summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, joined this year by Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Iran), which will take place in October in the Russian city of Kazan, and other items on the bilateral agenda.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, on the grounds of protecting the pro-Russian separatist minorities in the east and “denazifying” the neighboring country, which has been independent since 1991 - after the break-up of the former Soviet Union - and has been moving away from Moscow's sphere of influence and closer to Europe and the West.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory has plunged Europe into what is considered to be the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).
