Mozambican Police Investigate Suspect's Death a Few Days After Arrest

The Mozambican police are investigating the death of an alleged member of a criminal organization a few days after his arrest at the Ponta Gêa police station in Sofala, a source from the police told Lusa today.

“A commission of inquiry has been set up to effectively assess the circumstances in which he lost his life. He left the police unit alive, albeit in a serious condition,” Dércio Chacate, spokesman for the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) in Sofala, told Lusa, explaining that the death occurred at the Beira Central Hospital (HCB).

According to the forensic medicine report issued by the HCB, quoted today by the local media, the death of the 42-year-old detainee was caused by second degree burns, multiple bruises and trauma caused by blunt objects and boiling liquid.

The police spokesman said that the man, suspected of belonging to a criminal organization that carried out robberies, extortion, blackmail of local businessmen, aggravated thefts and physical assaults, arrived at the cells already weakened.

“When he was arrested, he was already showing signs of weakness and had some injuries with him, which is why he was taken to hospital on the 11th and 12th. On the 13th, because he showed no signs of improvement, he was promptly taken (...) to Beira Central Hospital, where he lost his life,” said Dércio Chacate.
