The outgoing secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, today warned the United States of America (USA) and European countries of the danger of "isolationism".
"We hear voices from both sides of the Atlantic [Ocean] calling for the US and Europe to follow different paths. Prioritizing short-sighted national interests over long-term cooperation will not serve us. Isolationism will not make anyone safe," Jens Stoltenberg said, according to excerpts of a speech he is expected to deliver in his final speech seen by AFP.
The outgoing NATO secretary general's last speech is not scheduled for 4:00 pm local time (3:00 pm in Lisbon), but AFP obtained parts of the speech in advance.
Jens Stoltenberg's warning, at the end of a decade at the helm of the Atlantic Alliance, coincides with the prospect of a possible return of Republican Donald Trump to the White House, should he win the US presidential election in November.
During his term in office, between 2017 and 2021, Donald Trump repeatedly criticised NATO and what he said was an unequal contribution from the different countries that make up the Atlantic Alliance.
The former US President even admitted the possibility of the United States of America leaving the political-military organisation (the country is NATO's main member state).
