Storm Boris: Budapest Uses Sandbags To Cope With Flooding

The biggest floods in the last decade are expected to hit Budapest this week.

The mayor of Budapest, Hungary, has warned the city's inhabitants that the biggest floods in a decade are expected this week in the wake of storm Boris, with the waters of the Danube beginning to 'invade' low-lying areas on Tuesday morning.

To anticipate possible damage, the municipality will use one million sandbags to reinforce flood defenses and has asked residents to take extra care when near the river.

Storm Boris, which is affecting countries in Central and Eastern Europe, has already killed at least seven people in Romania, seven in Poland, four in Austria and three in the Czech Republic.

On Tuesday, the European Union (EU) expressed its solidarity with the countries affected by these “devastating” floods and announced that it was “ready to act”.
