A new study published in JAMA reveals the best way to place the arm for a more accurate reading. Read all about it.
When you go to the doctor, or even at home, it's normal to measure your blood pressure in order to check the values. Did you know that the position in which you place your arm can influence the results and give incorrect values?
A new study published in JAMA by the American Medical Association has revealed that there are two positions that can affect the readings and give values that don't correspond to reality.
The research analyzed the blood pressure of 133 people with their arm in three positions: on their lap, resting on a surface or hanging by their side. The study concluded that if the arm was placed on the lap or next to the body, it gave higher values.
“These positions resulted in a substantial overestimation of the readings and could lead to incorrect diagnoses,” say those responsible for the research. Therefore, the best way to take the measurement is with the arm resting on a table or surface and at the level of the heart.
“In this position, the heart doesn't have to work harder to circulate the blood, which is reflected in more accurate blood pressure figures.”
