At Least 11 People Killed In Tribal Clashes In Pakistan

At least 11 people were killed and eight injured today, including women and children, during tribal clashes in northwest Pakistan, according to a local official.

Tensions flared in the Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province after two people were seriously injured in a gunfight between rival tribes. It was not immediately clear what caused the shooting.

Vehicles were also targeted in different areas of the district, causing more casualties, said government official Javedullah Khan.

Khan said efforts were being made to secure travel routes and restore normalcy. The injured were taken to a hospital in the area.

Pir Haider Ali Shah, a former parliamentarian and tribal council member, said that elders had arrived in Kurram to broker a peace deal between the tribes.

“The recent shooting incidents are regrettable and have hampered efforts for lasting peace,” said Ali Shah.

Last month, at least 25 people were killed in clashes between armed Shiites and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute.

Although both live together peacefully in the country, there have been tensions for decades between the communities in some areas, especially in Kurram, where Shiites dominate in parts of the district.
