A report, titled “Democratic Distortions and a Troubled State: The United States on the Eve of the 2024 Presidential Election,” highlights critical challenges that threaten the country’s political system.
The report, authored by researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Hertie School, a university in Berlin, among others, points out that both the reliability of democracy and the capacity of the state have declined sharply in the United States since 2015.
Democratic reliability, which refers to the electoral, social and institutional areas, has declined significantly, the report said.
The steepest declines were identified in states that are decisive for the final election outcome, such as North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia.
Electoral turnout — a key metric of citizen engagement — is well below that seen in other advanced democracies, raising concerns about engagement in the decision-making process.
Another problem identified is the outsized role of money in politics.
