Guinea-Bissau "Reaffirms Unconditional Support" To António Guterres

The President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, today expressed his "unconditional support" for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and "full confidence in his leadership".

The position was taken by the Guinean head of state on his personal social media and released in a note to the media by the press office of the country's presidency, with the title "Guinea-Bissau reiterates support for the UN Secretary-General".

Umaro Sissoco Embaló's reaction follows the news that Guinea-Bissau was left out of a list of 104 countries that jointly expressed their concern about Israel's position of declaring the UN Secretary-General "persona non grata".

The President of Guinea-Bissau "reaffirmed the country's unconditional support for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, highlighting its full confidence in his leadership and his commitment to defending Human Rights".

"On behalf of my country, Guinea-Bissau, I express our unconditional support for my friend António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN. I reiterate my full confidence in his work and his ongoing fight for Human Rights", said the Guinean President.

According to the signatories, the letter of support for António Guterres is signed by the majority of the members of the United Nations and reflects "broad and collective support from the entire international community."

On 2 October, the Government of Israel declared António Guterres 'persona non grata' for the UN Secretary-General's failure to condemn Iran's missile attack on Israeli territory and accused him of being "anti-Israeli" and of supporting "terrorists, rapists and murderers".
