Giulia Manfrini, an Italian surfer who was also a digital content creator, died on Friday after being attacked by a swordfish in Indonesia.
The 36-year-old was training when it happened and was rescued alive by two people. She was taken to hospital but couldn't resist her injuries.
Lahmudin Siregar, head of the Mentawai Disaster Management agency, explained that the fish jumped out of the water and hit the surfer in the chest.
“The information we received from the head of the Southwest Siberut district was that a foreign citizen of Italian nationality had suffered an accident while surfing,” said the official, quoted by the international press.
“Unexpectedly, a swordfish jumped out and stuck itself in the tourist's chest,” he added.
Born in the Italian town of Venaria Reale, Turin, Giulia started out skiing, then snowboarding and was currently surfing. Her passion for sport led her to set up a travel agency dedicated to sports tourism, both at sea and in the snow.
She had over 25,000 followers on Instagram.
