Nurse And Dog Die Trying To Save Man After Hurricane Strikes

A nurse and his dog died trying to save the life of a man who was stranded by the floods caused by Hurricane Helene, which swept away his home in Tennessee, United States.

According to ABC News, as the waters of Hurricane Helene rose around the Nolichucky River, nurse Boone McCrary, his girlfriend, Santana Ray, and their dog, Moss, headed to a fishing boat to search for the man. However, thick debris in the water jammed the boat's engine. With no power, it ended up hitting a bridge support and flipped over.

McCrary and Moss didn't make it out of the water alive. The nurse's girlfriend clung to a branch for hours until rescuers reached her.

Search teams found McCrary's boat and his dog's body two days later, but it took four days to find McCrary.

David Boutin, the man McCrary was going to save, was distraught when he heard what had happened.  “No one had ever risked their life for me (...) From what I've heard, he's always been like that. He's my guardian angel, that's for sure,” Boutin told the Associated Press.

The death toll from Hurricane Helene in six regions of the southeastern United States stands at 227. The authorities are still searching for missing persons.
