Pyongyang Prepares to Destroy Disused Inter-Korean Roads

South Korea said on Monday it had detected signs that North Korea was preparing to destroy the northern section of inter-Korean roads that are no longer in use.

The South Korean military said it had discovered that North Korea was preparing the explosions, according to the Associated Press news agency.

It was not clear which parts of the roads North Korea would destroy, the agency added.

North Korea said on October 11 that the South sent drones carrying anti-regime propaganda leaflets into the capital, Pyongyang, at least three times last week, and released photographs of one of the drones taken at night.

The North Korean military said on Monday it had ordered artillery units positioned along the border with South Korea to open fire if they detected any more drones from the neighboring country.

Artillery units “near the border line” were ordered by the military high command on October 12 to “fully prepare to open fire,” according to a statement from the North Korean General Staff spokesman, published by the state-run KCNA news agency.

Last week, North Korea said it would permanently block the border with the South and build defensive structures on the front line to counter “confrontational hysteria” from South Korean and US forces.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have reached their highest point in years, with North Korea continuing weapons tests and the South and the United States stepping up military exercises.

According to KCNA, North Korea last week tested a long-range artillery system that observers say poses a direct threat to Seoul, the South Korean capital just an hour’s drive from the border.
