Rare (And Forgotten) Copy of US Constitution Sells for $8 Million

The nearly 237-year-old document was found inside a metal cabinet while the property was being cleaned out after it was sold to the state.

A rare copy of the United States Constitution that was found inside a cabinet on a North Carolina plantation in 2022 sold at auction for $9 million (about 8,284,734 euros) on Thursday.

The auction was originally scheduled for September 28, but was rescheduled due to Hurricane Helene passing through Asheville, in that US state.

It took just seven minutes to reach the final price, out of about 10 bids, Brunk Auctions owner Andrew Brunk told CBS News.

The final price, including the buyer's premium, which remained anonymous, came to $11,070,000 (about 10,179,972 euros).

“To go from sitting in a filing cabinet in Edenton, North Carolina, to selling for $11 million is quite a journey,” Brunk said.

The nearly 237-year-old document was found inside a metal filing cabinet when the property was being cleaned out after it was sold to the state to be converted into a historic public site.

North Carolina Governor Samuel Johnston from 1787 to 1789 owned the farm and oversaw the state convention that ratified the Constitution.
