Russia claimed on Saturday to have seized the village of Zoryane in eastern Ukraine, bringing its troops even closer to the industrial town of Kurakhove, west of Donetsk, which is already under Moscow's control.
“The town of Zoryane (...) has been liberated” thanks to the “successful actions” of Moscow's forces, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The Russian ministry had claimed on October 8 to have taken the town, located about 10 kilometers from Kurakhové, but fighting has continued in the area in recent days.
The Russian army intends to press the Ukrainian forces towards Kurakhove, while continuing its assault towards Pokrovsk, a key road and rail junction for Kiev troops, located a little further north, still in the Donetsk region.
In Kurakhove, a town of around 20,000 inhabitants before the Russian offensive launched in 2022, AFP recently saw buildings with blown-out windows, the stigma of daily fighting.
At the same time, in recent days, Russian troops have stepped up their attacks in southern Ukraine, in the Zaporijia region.
As a sign of Ukraine's current difficulties, at the beginning of October Russia seized the town of Vougledar, located at the junction of the eastern and southern fronts, where a fierce battle has been raging for more than two years.
In addition, a Russian attack with explosive drones and guided aerial bombs left seven people injured in the Sumy region (north) on Friday night, according to the regional administration, which added that “energy infrastructure was damaged”.
