A 72-year-old British tourist drowned on Friday after being swept out to sea by a wave during a walk along the coast of Menorca in Spain. When he was swept out to sea, the elderly man ended up on the north side of Ciutadella Bay, known as Pont d'en Gil.
Residents of the apartments near the site still called the emergency services after seeing the tourist struggling in the water, but the sea currents ended up taking him further from the shore. By the time firefighters in a dinghy managed to reach him, the British man was already dead.
The man's body was taken to the port of Ciutadella, where he was formally declared dead.
Firefighters received the alert at around 1pm on Friday. The autopsy, which is expected to confirm that the elderly man died from drowning and not from a blow to the head, will take place this Saturday, reports the British newspaper Metro.
