Sergiño Dest gave an extensive interview to this Monday's edition of the Spanish newspaper Sport, in which he pointed to Xavi Hernández as the main 'culprit' for the fact that he didn't 'make it' at Barcelona, the club to which he was linked between 2020 and 2024.
“I have no regrets because, in the end, it was something that didn't depend on me, but I feel that I didn't have the necessary opportunities with Xavi. I felt I had to play with limits, that I wasn't myself. I wanted to be part of the attack, because that's my greatest virtue, but he asked me not to go up,” he said.
“I don't think he was honest with me. We had several conversations in which he told me something, but then I doubted whether it was really true. In the summer, before he went on vacation, he told me 'I'm counting on you, don't read the press'. As soon as I got back, he told me 'You have to go',” he added.
The US international, it should be remembered, arrived at Camp Nou in the summer of 2020 from Ajax for 21 million euros. He made 72 official appearances, but was loaned out to AC Milan and PSV, where he ended up staying for nothing.
