At Least Five Injured In Clashes In Maputo On Wednesday

At least five people were injured during clashes between protesters and police on Wednesday, the first day of the fourth phase of strikes and protests called by Venâncio Mondlane, the Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) announced today.

Yesterday, November 13, we received a total of 203 patients, including those with general illnesses, and of these 55 were victims of trauma. Of the 55, five were victims of the demonstrations", said the director of the Adult Emergency Service at HCM, the largest hospital in the country, Dino Lopes, in statements to the media.

The official said that of the total number of people injured during the riots, two were victims of probable gunshot wounds, and that of the five, four have already been discharged from hospital.

Dino Lopes assured that HCM remains on standby and prepared to receive and "respond" to a large number of patients using the "contingency plan" that the hospital has in place.

Mozambique, and especially Maputo, have experienced work stoppages and demonstrations called since October 21 by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who does not recognize the results of the general elections, announced by the CNE and which gave victory to Daniel Chapo and the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, the ruling party).

Mondlane called for a new period of national demonstrations in Mozambique, lasting three days, starting this Wednesday, in all capitals provincial governments, including Maputo, contesting the electoral process.

A protest that Mondlane asked to be extended to the country's ports and borders, and to the transport corridors that connect these infrastructures, appealing to truck drivers to join in.

The general commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Bernardino Rafael, said on Tuesday that there must be an "end" to the demonstrations and strikes, referring to them as "urban terrorism" with the intention of "altering the constitutional order".

On Tuesday, Mozambican businesspeople estimated the losses caused in 10 days of strikes and demonstrations, during which 151 businesses were vandalized, at 24.8 billion meticais (354 million euros).

The Mozambican Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) has already opened 208 criminal proceedings to hold accountable the "moral and material" perpetrators of the violence in the post-election demonstrations, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) also announced on Tuesday, holding presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane responsible.

The PGR stated that, within the "scope of its constitutional and legal powers", the MP "has been instituting legal proceedings, aiming to hold criminally accountable" the "moral and material" perpetrators and "accomplices of these acts".
