Juladi Khammoungkhoune, just 13 years old, survived a nightmare night at sea after the boat he was fishing in with his father and four other family members capsized on November 2 off the coast of Bodega Bay, California, USA.
The tragedy, caused by strong winds, killed not only the boy's father, but also the rest of the crew. Juladi only survived because he was wearing a life jacket and because he managed to get into a cooler with his father's help.
The man also tried to stay afloat with the help of the cooler, but ended up letting go of his son so that he could reach the shore more quickly.
Jude, as he is known to his friends, resisted the cold and managed to reach the beach several hours later. Exhausted, he fell asleep on the beach and didn't wake up until the morning.
The boy was eventually rescued and taken to hospital. The rest of the passengers were pronounced dead after the body of one of their cousins was found.
The boy told Metro that he is still in shock at what happened and that during the trip he prayed “to Jesus Christ” that he would survive the accident and be able to see his family again.
