Explosives Found in the Home of the Author of the Attack on the Supreme Court in Brasilia

The Federal District Military Police, responsible for security in Brasilia, Brazil's capital, reported that they had found explosive devices in a house rented by the perpetrator of Wednesday's attack on the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

Two explosions occurred on Wednesday night near the STF in Brasília, killing Francisco Wanderley Luiz, 59 - identified by the police as the perpetrator of the attack -, a member of the Liberal Party, led by former President Jair Bolsonaro.

According to security agents, the explosive devices were found during a search of a residence in Ceilândia, a city located near Brasília, where the perpetrator of the attack lived.

During the early hours of the morning, two small explosions were heard at the scene, according to local media. These explosions are usually used by experts to defuse possible explosive material.

According to GloboNews, the Brazilian Federal Police were also at the scene and found a message written on a mirror in the home of the perpetrator of the attack on the STF alluding to another attack carried out on January 8, 2023 in Brasília.

"Debora Rodrigues, please don't waste lipstick, it's to make women beautiful. A shitty statue uses TNT [explosive material]", reads the message released by the media.

Débora Rodrigues is one of the people accused of vandalizing the statue of Justice located in front of the STF, in Brasília, on January 8, 2023, when thousands of 'Bolsonaristas' attacked the headquarters of the Three Powers.

The STF was one of the buildings most attacked, along with the Palácio do Planalto and the Congress building, by thousands of radicals, in an attack that the judiciary is investigating as an attempted coup against Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, eight days after taking office as head of state after defeating Bolsonaro in the presidential elections.

The Brazilian police also reported that they managed to deactivate all the explosives brought by Wanderley Luiz.

A robot identified a belt with explosives strapped to the attacker's body and then a specialized agent approached to remove it and deactivate the devices, connected to a "timer".

The man's body remained in the Praça dos Três Poderes for 13 hours and was removed from the site early in the morning.

Wanderley Luiz followed several far-right pages on the social networks Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), such as Movimento Avança Brasil, Espaço Enéas Carneiro, Brasil Paralelo, Jornal da Cidade Online, Jair Messias Bolsonaro and Olavo de Carvalho.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro released a message on social media this morning in which he stated that he regretted and repudiated "any and all acts of violence, such as the sad episode yesterday [Wednesday] in Praça dos Três Poderes".

In his message, Bolsonaro also said he advocated peace and stated that "it is high time for Brazil to once again cultivate an environment that is conducive to peaceful confrontation between different ideas, and that the strength of arguments is worth more than the argument of force."

The Brazilian Federal Government has not yet officially responded to the incident.

The Supreme Federal Court and the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Brazilian Congress, suspended their work during the morning. The Senate, the upper house of Congress, remained closed for the entire day.
