Fire Destroys Famous Barcarès Christmas Market in France

fire has destroyed the well-known Barcarès Christmas market in France, which was scheduled to open on Saturday, November 16.

According to the Associated France Press (AFP), the flames completely destroyed ten of the typical wooden houses set up on the site to sell Christmas items, and caused a gas bottle to explode.

A source from the fire department told AFP that the fire started at around 4.30am (local time) in the restaurant area.

The causes of the fire remain unknown for the time being, but all indications are that it was an accident. The authorities are investigating.

The fire was not extinguished until 7:00 am. Around 60 firefighters fought the blaze.

Last year, the Barcarès Christmas market, which is one of the best known in France, had around 1.5 million visitors.

Despite the “huge economic impact” caused by the fire, the mayor of Barcarès, Bruno Berthet, has already guaranteed that the market will open to the public the following Saturday, November 23rd, “thanks to the mobilization of the teams”.
