Remember the 'Uncle Paulo' Case? Court Holds First Hearing Today

This Tuesday will see the first hearing of the case that became known as 'Uncle Paulo', the elderly man who was taken lifeless to a bank in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in April of this year.

It should be remembered that the 68-year-old man was taken to the bank by his niece, Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes, who will answer for the crimes of fraud and desecration of a corpse.

The session, which will take place in a closed room, will begin at 1pm (4pm in Lisbon) at the 2nd Criminal Court in Bangu.

The case took place on April 16, when the woman arrived at the bank with the elderly man in a wheelchair to ask for a bank loan of 17,000 reais (around 2,900 euros).

At the time, videos of the moment went viral on social media. Paulo's niece appeared in the images trying to get him to sign a document to make the withdrawal.

The man was motionless and had his eyes closed, which led the employees to suspect the situation and call the police. It was confirmed at the scene that the elderly man was dead.

The woman was arrested, but released two weeks later, in May, after the courts accepted a request from the defense and revoked her pre-trial detention.
