A man died on Sunday after being shot by police in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, France, after making several threats with a gun that turned out to be fake.
Police sources, cited by AFP, said the man was "very drunk" and knocking on the door of a house. He also allegedly threatened the police.
The police had been called to a dispute between neighbors. Reports indicated that a man, armed, was "knocking" on another person's door.
When officers arrived at the scene, the man threatened the police with an automatic pistol "shouting 'Allah Akbar'" ['God is Great' in Arabic], a police source told Le Figaro. One of the officers "drew his weapon" and shot the man three times, who died despite the intervention of the emergency services.
However, according to one of the sources confirmed to AFP, the weapon was fake.
The man was known to police but was not on the list of individuals who pose a serious threat to national security. In addition to being drunk, sources said, he appeared psychologically unstable.
The police team was tested for alcohol and drugs, and all tests came back negative.
