Spanish Police Seize 13 Tons of Cocaine Hidden in Bananas

The Spanish National Police have made a record cocaine seizure after finding around 13 tons of the narcotic hidden in a shipment of bananas in a container at the port of Algeciras, in southern Spain.

According to the local press, the discovery took place on October 14 and the cocaine was hidden in a container from Ecuador.

“It's obvious that these 13 tons of cocaine weren't just destined for the Spanish market. The Spanish market can only handle so much drug at once. This drug was destined to be distributed throughout Europe,” said Antonio Jesus Martinez, head of the National Police's Central Narcotics Squad, at a press conference.

This seizure beats the previous record in Spain, which occurred in 2023, when 9.4 tons of cocaine were also found in the port of Algeciras.

According to Martinez, the Spanish authorities were on alert after a tip-off from their Ecuadorian counterparts about a suspicious cargo on its way to Spain.

A woman, a partner in the company responsible for receiving the shipment of bananas, has been arrested, while two other men are on the run.
