Twelve students at Salisbury University in Maryland, United States, have been charged for allegedly committing a hate crime against a man due to his sexual preferences, a police source told CNN International.
The students, all men between the ages of 18 and 21, were charged with first-degree assault, kidnapping, reckless conduct and association with hate crimes in connection with an incident that happened on October 15.
A statement from Salisbury police said the suspects invited the victim to a home off the university campus under false pretenses. They forced the man to enter and sit on a chair, then began to attack him while insulting him.
According to CNN, one of the suspects met the victim on an LGBTQ dating app, pretended to be 16 years old and arranged a meeting. The attackers would have recorded the moment of the attacks and the video is in the possession of the police.
The American news channel also writes that the victim tried to leave the house, but was grabbed by several people and thrown to the floor, after which he needed medical attention, as he had bruises on his body and a fractured rib.
This case came to light after two witnesses, who saw the video of the attacks, made a report to the university police on October 29th. The Salisbury Police Department was later contacted.
Police have also identified seven more suspects who would be present. The investigation also determined that the suspects were members of or associated with a fraternity at the university.
