The Vatican Secretary of State congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in Tuesday's US presidential election, saying he hopes the new leader will put an end to the polarization that exists in the United States.
"We wish him much wisdom, because this is the main virtue of rulers, according to the Bible," Cardinal Pietro Parolin told the Italian press on the sidelines of an event at the Gregorian University.
"I believe that, above all, [Trump] has to work to be the president of the entire country and thus overcome the polarization that has occurred, which can be felt very clearly at this moment," the cardinal said.
"So we hope that he can really be an element of détente and pacification in the current conflicts that are bleeding the world. He said he will put an end to wars. Let's wait, let's wait. Of course, not even he has a magic wand," he said.
Parolin stated that "to end the war, we need a lot of humility, a lot of willpower, we need to truly pursue the general interests of humanity, instead of focusing on private interests."
Asked whether Ukrainians and Palestinians should fear that peace will be made at their expense, Parolin replied that "it is difficult to make a statement about these things."
"We will see what proposals [Trump] will make. Let's see now what he will propose after his inauguration," he added.
Republican Donald Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States, having surpassed the 270 votes needed in the Electoral College, with the results still being counted.
Trump also leads his Democratic opponent in the popular vote, with 50.9% to Kamala Harris' 47.6%.
The Republican Party also recovered the Senate by surpassing the threshold of 51 elected representatives, while in the House of Representatives it is also ahead in the count with 205 seats, just 13 away from the majority.
