French Police Find Gun That Belonged to Former Spanish President

French police have seized several illegal weapons in Seite-et-Marne, Paris, including a pistol that belonged to former Spanish President Niceto Alcala Zamora.

The seizure is the result of a six-month investigation that was launched following an alert from the Guardia Civil.

The pistol in question is of historical importance, as it is a collector's item given in 1932 to the first president of the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1936), Niceto Alcala Zamora, who, after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, went into exile and lived in France until 1941. The man then fled to Argentina, where he died in 1949.

Four people were arrested and 25 long guns, a STEN submachine gun, 11 unregistered pistols and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition were seized. After their arrest, the collectors were summoned to appear in court in April.

The investigation began after the Spanish Guardia Civil warned of the possible presence of the historic pistol in Seine-et-Marne.
