A fire at a private hospital in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu killed six people and injured more than 20 on Thursday night.
According to the international press, which cites the Dindigul district police, the fire broke out at 9:30 pm local time (3:30 pm in Lisbon) and the victims were found unconscious inside a hospital elevator, and their death was declared at the scene.
The surviving users were "rescued and admitted to nearby government and private hospitals", said MN Poongodi, the police chief.
The local government mourned the deaths of the victims and announced that it would pay compensation of 300,000 rupees (about 3,300 euros) to their next of kin.
People who suffered serious injuries will receive compensation of 100,000 rupees (1,100 euros) and those who suffered minor injuries will receive 50,000 rupees (about 560 euros).
