Suspect in CEO's murder criticized big companies
Luigi Nicholas Mangione, 26, was arrested on suspicion of murdering Brian Thompson, CEO of health insurer UnitedHealthcare. He was found dead in a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, 230 miles from where the crime was committed.
A standout student and valedictorian, Mangione graduated with honors in 2016 from Gilman College, a private, all-boys high school in Baltimore, Maryland. At his graduation, he gave a speech thanking his parents for their “far from small” financial investment and noting that his class “introduced new ideas and challenged the world around them.”
Middle-class family. The Mangione family owns several businesses in Baltimore, Maryland, where the young man grew up. Nicholas’ father is a professor at Temple University in Pennsylvania, the state where the suspect was arrested.
Master’s degree in computer science from an elite university. Mangione earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, part of the Ivy League, a prestigious association that includes other institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia universities.
His research focuses on artificial intelligence. Mangione's LinkedIn page indicates that he earned his bachelor's degree with a concentration in artificial intelligence and a secondary interest in mathematics. On his Twitter, Mangione commented on technology, programming and AI.
He worked as a researcher, assistant professor and as a data engineer. While studying, Mangione interned as a robotics researcher, game programmer and as a teaching assistant at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University. Since 2020, he has been a data engineer at TrueCar, an online car sales platform.
"When all forms of communication fail, violence is necessary to survive," he wrote about the Unabomber's manifesto. In a review of Ted Kaczynski’s book “Industrial Society and Its Future,” Mangioni wrote that the author was a “violent individual — correctly arrested — who hurt innocent people,” but that his predictions about modern society were “impossible to ignore.” He also criticized big business that “doesn’t care about you, your children, or your grandchildren.”
The suspect’s last known address is in Hawaii. Luigi Mangione has no criminal record in New York and is from Maryland. He is believed to have traveled to New York by bus.
