The president of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), which supports Venâncio Mondlane's candidacy, today rejected the election results announced by the Constitutional Council, promising "political, diplomatic and judicial" actions against "offenders".
"The Podemos party does not recognize or accept in any way the election results announced by the CC. We consider the underlying reason for not accepting them to be the lack of transparency, integrity, professionalism and responsibility of the electoral management bodies and, ultimately, the CC", declared the president of Podemos, Albino Forquilha.
On Monday, the CC proclaimed Daniel Chapo, a candidate supported by Frelimo, as the winner of the election for President of the Republic, with 65.17% of the votes, succeeding Filipe Nyusi in the position.
"I hereby proclaim the elected President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo", announced the president of the Constitutional Council, Lúcia Ribeiro, after an hour and a half of reading the proclamation ruling, in which she acknowledged irregularities in the electoral process, but that they "did not influence" the final result.
According to the results, Venâncio Mondlane received 24.19% of the votes, Ossufo Momade 6.62% and Lutero Simango 4.02%.
In a press conference in Maputo in response to the results announced by the CC, Albino Forquilha accused that body of denying the decisions and wishes of Mozambicans as expressed in the ballot boxes.
"Podemos will continue its struggle alongside the oppressed, discriminated, persecuted, impoverished and murdered people through political, diplomatic and judicial means, the latter using possible national and international channels against the offenders", promised Forquilha.
The president of Podemos called for peaceful marches and demonstrations in the search for what he called "electoral truth".
"We call on our compatriots, young people who are fighting from Rovuma to Maputo for the justice of these elections, to continue their peaceful march without vandalizing public and private property", he asked, indicating that the demonstrations should continue as a means of reclaiming "what was stolen".
The Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) won the elections on 9 October with an absolute majority, securing 171 seats, with the newcomer Podemos electing 43, dethroning Renamo as the opposition leader.
According to the results announced by the president of the CC, Lúcia Ribeiro, regarding the general elections on 9 October, Frelimo maintains a parliamentary majority, with 171 seats, 24 fewer than was previously announced on 24 October by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
Podemos, which until now was an extra-parliamentary party, came in second place, gaining the status of main opposition party, with 43 deputies, 12 more than previously announced by the CNE. While the ruling announcing the results was being read, protesters supporting Venâncio Mondlane were already protesting in the streets, with burning tires. The post-election clashes caused at least 130 deaths, according to the report by the Decide Electoral Platform, which monitors electoral processes in Mozambique, and which also indicates that 385 people were shot.
The general elections of October 9 included the seventh presidential elections - in which the current head of state, Filipe Nyusi, who has reached the limit of two terms, has not run - simultaneously with legislative elections and elections for provincial assemblies and governors.
