The Canadian Prime Minister warned on Monday that Donald Trump's second term will be more difficult, because his team "has clearer ideas" and that the threat of customs barriers for Canada and Mexico is "serious".
Justin Trudeau, who on November 30 unexpectedly went to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Trump, stated, during an event in Halifax, Canada, that, in relation to Trump's first presidency (2017-2021), "Now it will be different."
As he explained: "It's going to be a little more difficult. They come in with clear ideas of what they want to do straight away."
He also pointed out that Trump's threat to immediately apply a 25% customs duty to Canada and Mexico must be taken seriously, as it would be "devastating" for the Canadian economy.
"But it would also pose real problems for its citizens. The US buys 65% of its oil from Canada, large amounts of electricity, and all of the gas exported by Canada. They depend on our steel and aluminum, as well as a variety of agricultural imports," pointed out.
Trudeau highlighted that all of these products would become more expensive for US consumers.
Finally, Trudeau assured that if Trump imposes customs tariffs, he will do the same.
