Trump's Daughter-in-Law Steps Down as Republican Party Leader, Could Go to Senate

Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of US President-elect Donald Trump, announced Monday her intention to resign as vice-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), fueling rumors that she may take up a seat in the Senate.

In a message on social media, Lara Trump stated that she managed to achieve the three objectives she set when she assumed leadership of the party in March: surpassing fundraising records, building an 'army' of election observers and getting millions of people to vote in advance.

"The work I came to do has been completed and I intend to formally withdraw from the RNC at our next meeting", declared the leader, who did not anticipate her future plans.

Lara Trump, married to Eric Trump, one of Donald Trump's sons, increasingly appears to be poised to be the replacement for Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who the president-elect has nominated as his next secretary of state.

“If I am elected to hold another position, it would be a real honor for me,” she stressed last month, when asked about the subject in an interview with Fox News.

The task of choosing the new senator falls to the governor of Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis, who faced Donald Trump in the party primaries, but later declared his electoral support.

Furthermore, according to American media, the president-elect is considering nominating DeSantis as Secretary of Defense, as the candidacy of his current nominee, Pete Hegseth, is faltering after he was accused of abusing a woman in California in 2017 and of alcoholism.

In an interview this Sunday with NBC, Trump expressed confidence that Hegseth, who denied having sexually assaulted a woman, will win the support of the majority of the Senate to be ratified as head of the Pentagon.

Lara Trump assumed the vice presidency of the RNC on March 8 after receiving the support of her father-in-law in a sign of the control that the Trump family exercises over the Republican Party.

In his farewell message, he thanked Trump and RNC Chairman Michael Whatley for their support and work.
