Defenses Shot Down 46 Shahed Drones And Kamikazes Launched By Russia

Ukrainian air defenses have shot down 46 Shahed drones and other kamikaze-launched missiles launched by the Russian military since 19:30 (16:30 GMT) on Wednesday, the air force said today.

The drones were intercepted in the Ukrainian regions of Poltava, Cherkasy and Dnipropetrovsk (center), Sumi and Kharkiv (northeast), Chernigiv and Kiev (north) and Kherson and Mykolaiv (south).

Several houses in the Kharkiv, Sumi and Cherkasy regions were damaged by fragments of the intercepted drones.

According to the Ukrainian air force, the Russian military also launched 24 replica drones -- devices without explosive charges, cheaper and designed to confuse enemy defenses -- which fell without causing damage.

Russia has been attacking Ukraine every night with Iranian Shahed drones, with the intention of depleting its defenses of ammunition, identifying their location and destroying its infrastructure.

Ukraine has frequently intercepted almost all of these drones and responded with similar attacks against targets located on Russian territory.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, arguing that it wanted to protect pro-Russian separatist minorities in the east and "denazify" the neighboring country, which has been independent since 1991 - after the collapse of the Soviet Union - and which has been moving away from Moscow's sphere of influence and closer to Europe and the West.
