More Than 120 People Arrested on Greek Island

Greek authorities arrested 124 migrants on Karpathos island in the Dodecanese archipelago in the southeastern Aegean Sea on Monday after unmarked boats were spotted sailing close to the coast.

The Greek coast guard said 58 migrants were discovered during an inspection near the main port of the island, located in the southeastern Aegean Sea.

Another 66 were found in a more remote area to the north, many of them detained on land, also after arriving on another unmarked boat.

A 24-year-old migrant was arrested for allegedly possessing false identification documents.

Greek authorities blame ongoing wars in the Middle East for the rise in illegal migration from Türkiye and the Libyan coast.

Greece reported a nearly 50 percent increase in illegal arrivals last year, with Syrians making up the largest group of migrants.
