Four Arrested For Fire That Killed Eight People In Serbian Nursing Home



The fire occurred on January 20th. The four detainees are suspected of crimes of abuse of power and negligence.



Four people were arrested on Thursday on suspicion of being linked to a fire that occurred on January 20 at a nursing home in Barajevo, on the outskirts of Belgrade, Serbia. Eight people died and seven were injured.


According to Serbian authorities, cited by the Reuters news agency, the detainees are employees of the Ministry of Labor and Welfare and the Department of Supervision and Inspection and are charged with crimes of abuse of power and negligence.


"They are suspected of having allowed the nursing home in Barajevo to operate without meeting the necessary conditions and without the approval of the competent ministry for fire safety planning," said a statement from the Serbian Interior Ministry.


The Public Prosecutor's Office previously revealed that the fire was caused by one of the residents, who was among the fatal victims.


The fire occurred during the early hours of January 20th. According to state television RTS, the alert was given at 3:30 am local time (2:30 am in Lisbon) and at the time of the incident there were 30 people in the nursing home.
