Timorese President José Ramos-Horta today appointed António da Conceição, known as "Kalohan", as Timor-Leste's ambassador to Switzerland, whose priority will be to work with the United Nations agencies based in Geneva.
"The main priority will be to continue the work carried out by previous ambassadors in Geneva, related to the United Nations, its organizations and other international organizations based in Geneva," António Kalohan told reporters after the appointment ceremony, which took place at the Presidential Palace in Dili.
The new ambassador also indicated that he will continue to strengthen bilateral relations with Switzerland, despite there being no official cooperation between the two governments.
"We will continue to promote the interests that can be developed with the Swiss Government. However, according to information I have received, the Swiss Government does not have official cooperation with the Government of Timor-Leste, but collaborates with some civil society organizations in the country, supporting various local activities", explained António da Conceição.
The diplomat said he will continue to promote issues related to human rights, Timor-Leste's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other topics of international relevance.
António da Conceição highlighted that President José Ramos-Horta advised him on priorities related to participation in political events in Geneva, highlighting the need for consultations with the Head of State and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to define the best position for Timor-Leste.
Current deputy and secretary-general of the Democratic Party (PD, in the Timorese Government), António da Conceição had been appointed ambassador to Indonesia in December 2023, but ended up being dismissed and not taking up the post due to a legal process in which he was convicted, but which, after appeal, culminated in his acquittal in April 2024.
