105 Migrants Including Three Minors Rescued Near Canary Islands



The maritime rescue rescued 105 sub-Saharan migrants, including 17 women and three minors, who were trying to reach the Spanish island of El Hierro in two canoes in the early hours of today, a spokeswoman for the state-owned company said.



The first boat was detected by the SIVE coastal surveillance system radar at around 2:20 am (same time in Lisbon), about 13 kilometers south of the island.


The group received help from Salvamar Ácrux, which accompanied them to the port of La Restinga.


The Spanish news agency EFE describes that the occupants disembarked at around 4:30 am.


In this first operation, a total of 61 people were rescued: 48 men and 13 women.


While the operation was underway, radar detected a second boat 16 kilometers from La Restinga.


In this case, there were 44 people: 37 men, four women and three minors.
