Earthquake Hits Thailand’s Capital, Leaving at Least Three Dead



At least three people died in the collapse of a 30-storey building under construction in Bangkok following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar.



Thailand's deputy prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said that searches were continuing to find 81 people trapped in the rubble of the building in Bangkok.


The Thai government has declared a state of emergency in the country's capital.


The strong earthquake in Myanmar was recorded at 13:30 (06:30 in Lisbon). 


A second earthquake was recorded in Thailand - 12 minutes later - according to information recorded by the United States Geological Survey and Germany's GFZ Geoscience Center.


The earthquake was recorded at a depth of ten kilometers and the epicenter was located 17 kilometers from the city of Mandalay, Myanamr, with 1.2 million inhabitants.


In Myanmar (formerly Burma), the ruling military junta declared a state of emergency in six areas of the country due to the damage caused by the earthquake.


Myanmar's Disaster Management Committee said in a statement that the strong earthquake, felt strongly in neighboring Thailand, was followed by three aftershocks that caused damage.


The Myanmar Armed Forces, who are in power following the 2021 coup d'état, have declared an emergency in Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, northeastern Shan State, Naipyido and Bago.
