MP Takes “Rotten And Stinky” Salmon To Australian Parliament

On Wednesday, MP Sarah Hanson-Young took a salmon to the Australian parliament to protest against a proposed law by the country's government that would see the species exploited in a bay on the west coast of Tasmania, which is classified as a world heritage site.

The video of the unusual moment quickly went viral on social media and was reproduced by many international media outlets.

It shows Sarah Hanson-Young, from the Greens party, showing the dead fish in a plastic bag while questioning a representative of the environment minister about the issue.

After some confusion over the fish, which the Financial Review described as “rotten and smelly”, the president of the Australian parliament, Sue Lines, asked Sarah to remove the “prop”.

For the Greens, salmon farms harm marine wildlife because of the chemicals used.
