Plane Hits Kite While Landing at Washington Airport

A United Airlines flight hit a paper kite while landing at Reagan National Airport in Washington on Saturday.

Pilots reported seeing the ride flying over Gravelly Point, a park near the runway along the banks of the Potomac River.

Flying kites there is prohibited due to its proximity to the airport.

"I was over the park, about 100 feet above the ground, it looks like it's right in the flight path," the pilots said, according to Air Traffic Control audio cited by CBS News.

Flight 654, a Boeing 737, landed safely with 126 passengers and five crew members on board around 4 p.m. local time, according to United.

"The aircraft landed safely, customers disembarked normally and, after inspection, [it was found that] there was no damage to the aircraft," the airline explained.

Police confiscated the parrot, but no charges were filed and the object was eventually returned to its owner.
